Call for Papers
Climate Finance and the Sustainable Energy Transition
Virtual Conference -- June 20-21, 2024
The transition from an energy sector based on fossil fuels to one based on sustainable energy sources, and the associated transition to electrification in many industrial and transportation functions, will place substantial demands on global capital markets. The availability of financing, from traditional as well as new sources, may be a key determinant of the speed of this transition. To promote research on these issues, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University are pleased to announce their third joint research conference. This conference series, launched in 2018, promotes economic research on public policies that bear on financial markets, particularly on topics that are of interest in both China and the United States. It brings together rigorous, current research by leading international scholars and policy experts.
The conference program will consist of both invited presentations and contributed papers focusing on climate finance and the sustainable energy transition. The program will be organized by James Poterba (MIT and NBER) and Hong Yan (SAIF). The meeting will include research papers on a range of issues related to the financing of the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- the role of private capital investment and public markets in funding new energy technologies, including the role of public-private partnerships and state-owned enterprises;
- the measurement of carbon emissions for individual firms, and for specific products, and the use of out-sourcing by some firms with regard to emission-intensive elements of their production process;
- the impact of regulatory requirements for disclosure of carbon emissions and other attributes related to the energy transition at the security or the portfolio level;
- demand for stocks and bonds issued by firms with low-carbon footprints, “impact investing,” and the measurement and interpretation of historical returns on low-carbon portfolios;
- the design of market institutions for carbon offsets and the role of government subsidies in supporting these markets;
The conference will emphasize papers that study financial aspects of sustainable energy policy, with particular interest in topics that are relevant in both China and the United States. Papers that study the relevant experience of other nations are also welcome. The conference will take place virtually on June 20-21, 2024 (US Eastern Time).
To submit a paper for potential presentation, please send a PDF file no later than 11:59pm ET on Thursday, February 29, 2024 to nber@saif.sjtu.edu.cn.
Submissions from scholars who are early in their careers, researchers who are not NBER affiliates, and researchers from under-represented groups in the economics profession are encouraged. Authors chosen to present papers will be notified in mid-March, 2024.
